THE MUKO CLINIC PROJECT

Creating a healthcare system in a region previously not serviced with medical workers or facilities

Situated: Muko, Southern Uganda; a district of seven villages amongst both hills and lakes near the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Issues:
1. Child and Maternal Mortality Rate
2. Underfunded and understaffed Health Services
3. Poor system of transport to medical facilties
4. Lack of skilled healthcare workers

Program beginning date: 2008

GOAL: To build a Clinic; serviced from a series of Mobile Clinics and train and equip healthcare-workers as first responders to medical needs.

Action and Strategy

A strategy to address the health needs was formulated in three stages.

STAGE ONE:

IN 2008, money was raised primarily through the Grainery Church in Newcastle; and a facility was built that included: a large outpatient building, a two-bed ward, a lab room and a pharmacy, and two delivery rooms.

STAGE TWO:

More funds were raised in 2013 and an ambulance and medical equipment were purchased. Seven local villages were also equipped with stretchers and solar lanterns for transport to the clinic.

STAGE THREE

This is our current Stage. The hope is to complete the unfinished Ward and improve the birthing faciltities. This final stage was the focus of the 2016 Christmas appeal. The apppeal asked for funds for completing electrical work, completing private birthing rooms with more spacious and workable facilties attached.

What is still required?

The Grainery Church is running a new fundraising campaign in late 2018 to revitalize and enhance the healthcare work of this centre.
